Busy week ahead for bowlers

- Gwen Lawson

There was little success for Northland representative teams competing in the 1-5 year and Premier 1 division for women last weekend.

Both competitions were won by Auckland teams.

The Northland Premier team was using this event as a trial for its team formation for the national event being held this weekend.

They would have found the competition as strong as they will expect to find in their section of the New Zealand event this weekend.

Both the men and women have travelled to Wellington for the event, along with the men and women from the Far North Centre.

Keep in touch with the play on the Bowls NZ website or on Facebook.

For the 1-5 squad it was a disappointment, finishing in fourth place.

The consolation might be

that there were several firstyear bowlers in the squad and the experience would have been a sound investment for the future.

The event, sponsored by Carter Holt Harvey, will be held at Whanga¯ rei greens on March 24. Play commences at 9.30am.

A largely virtual St Patrick’s Day was planned for New York City yesterday, a year after the annual parade celebrating Irish heritage was cancelled because of Covid-19.

Although the city’s usual huge parade with floats and marching bands was cancelled, mayor Bill de Blasio joined parade leaders and several dozen National Guard troops in marching up Madison Avenue to keep the tradition alive. A live broadcast of the Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral took place. A virtual parade featuring clips from past years was to follow. Multitudes usually line Fifth Avenue for New York’s St Patrick’s Day parade, which traces its roots to the 1760s.

St Patrick’s Day is usually big business for the city’s taverns and restaurants, and for tourism. This year, because of Covid restrictions, celebrations were muted.
