West coast still coughing up snapper

-

A local fishing competition has shown snapper were still being reeled in off the 90 Mile Beach midway through May.

With very big seas and not so pleasant conditions for the 90 Mile Beach Surfcasting Club’s Ray White Field day last month, 32 club members and a visitor weighed in a total of 17 snapper, 34 kahawai and two trevally, noted event spokesman Jack Rogers.

“While not exactly in abundance, snapper are about for the taking,” he remarked.

The heaviest snapper of the day was weighed in by Miko Rogers at 5.93kg, taking out first prize while second prize for the heaviest trevally was Phil Kake with 3.95kg, and third prize for catching the heaviest kahawai went to Steven Beckett’s 1.69kg. Other prizewinners were Skarn Hokai 4.89kg snapper 4, Dave Hallett 2.18kg trevally 5, Keri Hokai 1.67kg kahawai 6, Dave Lloyd 4.08kg snapper 7, Jack Rogers 1.59kg kahawai 8, Oscar Parlour 3.98kg snapper 9, Pete Watson 1.55kg kahawai 10.

The haggle of a 2.25kg snapper was won by Watson with a 1.97kg specimen, while sponsored drawn prizes went to junior Arlia Hokai and senior Steven Beckett. Organisers gave a heartfelt thanks to the event sponsors for their support.
