Anglican ball held at Ahipara

-

The first ball ever to be held in the Roma Marae Hall was that of the Anglicans, held last Friday, and it proved a very colourful and highly successful occasion.

The hall was beautifully decorated in pink and white streamers, with nikau and ponga ferns lining the walls in stately manner.

The young members of the community were well to the fore, the girls dressed in ball gowns made by themselves, with matching hairdos and accessories, whilst their escorts were immaculate in suits and bow ties.

The maxina, valeta, three-step and Gay Gordons were enjoyed by the younger folk, and a couple of twists went well with the younger set, although a few of the not so young proved themselves capable of keeping up with the times, all adding to enjoyable dancing.

The Northlanders band was in attendance, whilst Mr. Gibson Walters was a very capable m.c.

The tables at supper time were set up angle-wise and were well laden with delicacies including turkey, pork, chicken, hot savouries and lovely decorated cakes, these being heartily enjoyed by everyone.

Kits donated by Mrs. R. Pene, Mrs. Mereana Graham, Mrs. Florrie Berghan and Mrs. Kate Phillips were competed for.

The Vestry Committee of the Ahipara Anglican Church is appreciative of all who donated and combined generously, especially the workers, Maori and Pakeha, who were rewarded by their first ball being a happy and highly successful night to be remembered.

The guest of honour at the ball was the Rev. Waha Tauhara.

"The maxina, valeta, threestep and Gay Gordons were enjoyed by the younger folk, and a couple of twists went well with the younger set. "
