Slew of defaults by TRL teams

Taitokerau

A series of defaults defined round 14/18 of the Tai Tokerau Rugby League championship on Saturday and following the loss of the Waipapakauri Bombers, who have gone into recess, meant only two games were played.

They were the Ngati Kahu Sharks handing the Pawarenga Broncos a 40-6 thumping at Shark Park in Taipa, while the Ngati Wai Seahawks dealt to the Kerikeri Makos 54-10 at Simson Park in Moerewa.

Defaults came from the Aupouri Repo to Kaikohe Lions (due to have been played in Kaikohe), the Taniwha Taiamai to the Te Hiku Mavericks (in Waipap), and the defunct Bombers to the United Valley Crushers (Taheke).

Results from round 13 on June 23 (not published in last Tuesday’s edition) were: Taiamai 12 Ngati Kahu 55; Repo 48 Ngati Wai 48; Pawarenga 12 United Valleys 10; Kerikeri 12 Te Hiku 50; Waipapakauri 0 Kaikohe 30 (default).

■ STANDINGS: Mavericks (points diff 424) 24 points, Kaikohe (336) 22, Ngati Kahu (286) 20, United Valleys (146) 19; Aupouri* (63) 17, Pawarenga (-200) 11 Ngati Wai (-152) 9, Kerikeri (-282) 5, Taiamai* (-357) 5, all played 14 bar * played 13.

Only one game is scheduled this weekend — being the postponed Repo vs Taniwha match — with the TRL Fite Nite event being held at Te Rangi Aniwaniwa. And, all further games featuring the Bombers will see the opposition given a 30-point default win.

Whangarei

Moerewa Tigers ran riot on home turf to thrash bottom-ofthe-table Hora Hora Broncos 104-4 in round 13/15 of the Whangarei-based Rugby League Northland Premiership on Saturday.

The weekend’s other result saw table-toppers Otangarei Knights squash Portland Panthers 46-14 at Otangarei while Takahiwai Warriors enjoyed the bye.

■ STANDINGS: Otangarei (for/ against 394/212) 20 points, Takahiwai (420/178) 19, Moerewa (378/192) 17, Portland (212/381) 10, Hora Hora (179/432) 4.

As the only Far North side in the competition, the Tigers have a bye in the penultimate round this weekend.
