Weather cooperates for Searley Memorial

-

The failure of threatening weather to materialise allowed the Liz Searley Memorial tournament to be successfully completed at the Kaitaia Church Road Bowling Club last month.

A report from the event began by noting the day dawned with showers on the cards and the presence of mist in the valleys of Kaitaia as bowlers arrived prepared for the annual triples tournament — which has been run for the last 20 years — with scarves and hats prominent. Twelve teams entered the fray to play four games of one hour each with six bowls per team, with president John Richardson welcoming players and visitors alike before announcing the day’s format.

Following the last game, afternoon tea was served to satisfy all tastes, then prizegiving took place with accompanying remarks from skips expressing their appreciation of the day’s bowling including a true green, organisation of games and the summer weather which prevailed — contrary to predictions

— of warmth, with no wind or rain. Special mention was also made to event sponsor, Davina Reed, for her generosity.

The top placegetters were, Al Thom skip, Jill Phillips and Adele Gardner 4 wins, 24 ends, 55 points, 1; John Fox Champkins, Tess Pont, Faye Irwin Erceg 3, 23, 40, 2; Joanne Milich, Dennis Hailey Al Thom with the Liz Searley Memorial flanked by teammates Adele Gardner and Jill Phillips at the Kaitaia Church Rd Bowling Club last month.

and John Doe 21⁄2, 22, 42, 3; Kevin Briscoe, Val Jones and Lillian Wells 21⁄2, 21, 39, 4.

In other news, Davie Riddle as skip and Shirley Crabtree won the Masters’ Shield, while runners-up were Tess Pont and Raemonde Baucke. A report from the club’s recently held AGM is forthcoming.
