Far North claims Le Roy Pairs title

-

The Far North Indoor Bowls Association members travelled to Whanga¯rei recently to contest the Le Roy pairs mixed format challenge, a long running annual event contested by teams from Whanga¯rei, Bay of Islands, Far North and Rodney/ Northern Wairoa.

With only one provincial rep in the ranks, the Far North side proceeded to take out the competition in a close result from a star-studded Whanga¯rei line-up boasting most of the Northland players. After both teams finished on 42 win points, the Far North claimed victory on countback.

A highlight from the day was having two Far North teams suffering only one loss apiece; Eddie ‘Da Boss’ McCarthy and Sarah Travers, and Peter and Janet Sole. It was noted Janet wasn’t well and struggled but dug deep and finished the day.

Top team of the day were Whanga¯rei’s John Coleman and Inez Bunting who went through without losing a game. The top team from the Bay of Islands were the husband and wife duo of Bob and Pauline McKinley while for Rodney/ Northern Wairoa, it was Don Simpson and Shirley Gilmore.

“It was no easy feat to travel for a couple of hours and then play top bowls on an unfamiliar floor, so very well done to all of the bowlers from the Far North you have done us proud.”
