Karikari comes to a pink party
The Karikari Community Hall at Whatuwhiwhi was a hive of activity recently, when Amy Culley and her dedicated team of volunteers staged a very successful Breast Cancer Foundation fundraiser.
The Pink Ribbon event had
47 hungry guests tucking into waffles, muffins, deluxe corn fritters, mini-sausages, fruit, smoothies and more. Ticket sales and a plant auction raised
$865, which was later boosted by another donation to crack the $1000 mark.
“For a small community, that is marvellous,” Amy said.
“Thank you so much everyone, even those who donated but didn’t attend.
“Bertha Yerkovich was volunteered for the role of auctioneer, which was possibly why the income from the auction was in the hundreds. She kept everyone entertained with her unique style of humour, so they didn’t realise how much they were paying,” she added.
Early in the week Amy had suspected there wouldn’t be much of a turnout, but numbers doubled on the Friday, sending her into a mild panic. Everyone was fed, with food to spare, however.
Amy also thanked her sister, Emily Lauder, for her help.
“Emily says I’m the most unorganised organiser, and that’s why I need her, to finish the myriad things I start and then get distracted, doing something else,” she said.

She also thanked Donna Koele and Debera McLeod, for helping set up and pack up, Chris Mann, Glenys Urlich “and quite a few more” who stayed to deal to a mountain of dishes and clean up, the Karikari Hall committee for the venue, Lizzical Naulls for her donation of an “amazing” cake, Ani’s Catering (Ani Leef) and Ramada for their spot prizes, Barbara Gibson, Lindsey Bellette, Shane and Sheree Foy, Donna Koele and others for their prize and food donations.
Also on the list were her husband Alan Culley for supporting her, and sons Caleb (7), Josh (5) and Daniel (3) for blowing up a huge packet of balloons and putting up with their very busy mum.
