Airways spreads its wings in Puerto Rico training deal

AIRWAYS NZ has spread its wings after signing an agreement to establish an air traffic control training campus in Puerto Rico.

Announced at the World ATM Congress in Madrid, the deal will see Airway NZ provide air traffic services operations and air traffic management courses at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico. (UIPR). It is the largest private university in Puerto Rico, with a dedicated School of Aeronautic­s.

Chancellor Juan F. Martı´nez said the partnershi­p would allow the university to improve its specialise­d course delivery and technologi­es: ‘‘Collaborat­ion with Airways provides UIPR with a proven set of courses . . . which enables us to provide world-class training to the next generation of air traffic management profession­als.

‘‘Our students will love the realism of Airways state-of-the-art Total Control simulators, and we’re very impressed with the calibre of the courseware and operationa­l personnel.’’

Airways head of training Sharon Cooke said the first intake of trainees may be in August. ‘‘Our Airways team are very practised at establishi­ng and running training programmes internatio­nally, with a team currently working with Emirates Aviation College in Dubai.’’

Airways will provide a full air traffic control training programme for UIPR, including management and operation of the training facility, teaching resources, aerodrome and radar simulators, training support and quality assurance.

The state-owned enterprise, looks after key aviation infrastruc­ture in New Zealand, managing more than one million flights each year, and has also provided air traffic management, navigation services and consultanc­y in more than 65 countries.
