-

JARRYD HAYNE has made a sensational start in his bid to secure a permanent position with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers.

Playing against the Houston Texans in the first pre-season outing for the 49ers, Hayne showed NFL defences are just as vulnerable as those in the NRL once were in his side’s 23-10 loss.

The performance pleasing 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula, who seems to think Hayne can only get better. ‘‘This was our first look at him in live action and we’re excited for him,’’ Tomsula said.

‘‘Jarryd’s a professional athlete. He did some good things, but it’s the first pre-season game and we’ve got to grow from here.’’

The former Parramatta star produced a 53-yard run early in the second quarter which led to a 49ers touchdown.

Hayne, who is fighting for a place in the 49ers’ 53-man roster, popped through a big gap before stepping the cover defence and going close to scoring a touchdown.

Playing as a running back Hayne led the 49ers in rushing yards, making 63 yards from his five carries.

Showing his versatility Hayne also proved his NRL fullback skills translate well to the NFL.

The Hayne plane took off on his one kickoff return as he dashed for 33 yards on a bullocking run – a display the NFL tweeted to their 12.7 million followers.
