Team of everymen

The Shamrock Rovers of Darwin FC exited the FFA Cup in the round of 32 this week, at the hands of the Brisbane Strikers.

But given the lineup they had, the fact they made it that far was an amazing feat.

Having won the Football Federation Northern Territory premier league last season, Rovers entered a talented group of professionals into the Cup.

When listing the experience their team had they were specific with the roles each player had.

Goalkeeper Matthew Ashton, for instance, was a burger flipper and McDonalds, while midfield maestro Simon Bell is a limo driver/DJ/bar manager.

The entire back four was made up of tradies, with a welder (Dexter Newman), scaffolder (Daniel Bulman), electrician (Gary Waters) and mechanic (Marvin Wilding), and combined the whole squad would go a long way to completing a house if you needed one built.

A member of the Irish police was also included in the team, as was a forklift operator and a broadband installer. Unfortunately the team lost 6-0.

They missed the bus

Norwich City unveiled their new playing kit this week, and their third strip was something of a surprise.

The striking white, green and gold pattern is, interesting, shall we say, looking almost like it is attempting camouflage.

The club said the kit is inspired by the history of the club, but one Norwich City fan put it better.

‘‘Inspired by bus seats, more like,’’ James Jones said, and it’s hard to disagree.

It isn’t the worst playing kit you’ll ever see - that may be reserved by the muscle kit CD Palencia wore earlier this year but it is pretty bad.

Maybe the New Zealand Olympic uniform isn’t as bad as we thought.

Dirk goes zaza

NBA’s big German basketballer Dirk Nowitzki turned his attention to football this week, appearing in a charity game in his home country. What resulted was a superb display from the big man, who showed he should probably stick to his sport.

Dirk attempted a bicycle kick during his time on the field, which was a comical effort, but his finest moment came when taking a spot kick. Having obviously watched Euro 2016, Nowitzki found his inner Zaza and trolled all Italians with a brilliant penalty routine. Just as Zaza did, he also blasted the kick high and wide of the goal.

Pests on the golf course

Golfers around the world are reporting a big issue when hitting their local golf courses, and no, it isn’t moles.

Rouge Pikachus, Pidgeys, Ratatas, you name it, have been strolling the fairways of clubs around the world for the past few weeks causing havoc for paying members.

Such is the issue, Manawatu Golf Club had to issue a warning to Pokemon trainers this past week about the dangers of hunting Pokemon on the course.

With a Pokestop, which is a landmark in the game, sitting on the golf club driveway, people have been flooding to the course.

‘‘Golf is being played as soon as you get to that gate, there are [golfers] coming down that hole fairly regularly,’’ Manawatu golf club general manager Michael Williams said. ‘‘As soon as they walk through they can come into the firing line. We don’t want people to be hit by a golf ball travelling 200m through the air, it is going pretty quick.’’

You’ve been warned, Pokemon trainers.

‘‘The other sportsmen understand that the quality of their medals will be different." Russian President Vladimir Putin
