STILL ON OUR PLATES

Burger Wellington offerings to stay

- BRITTANY MANN

Thousands of burgers have been chowed down this month during the annual showcase of the capital’s finest fare.

It was impossible for a mere mortal to sample each of the 116 burgers on offer during this year’s Wellington On a Plate, which ended on Sunday.

Thankfully, some of the participating restaurants are keeping their bespoke buns on their menu – for now.

The Green Man Pubhas retained its Hurricanes Bus Burger on its menu for this week (though that probably won’t prompt the local sportsman who inspired it to sample one).

Burgers at Pan De Muerto, The Ramen Shop, Brew’d On Boulcott and Burger Liquor will be available while stocks last.

The latter’s Maggic Burger, which features a Preston’s aged beef patty with onion dip, salt ‘n’ vinegar pickles and bacon jam, had sold almost 3000 servings in two weeks.

Likewise, Muse had had great success with its debut burger, the BBW. Owner Samuel North said they weren’t expecting to sell so many – about 1200 since August 12. The BBW features Wairarapa wagyu beef with baby watercress, and aged gouda, with triple-cooked chips on the side.

Beat Kitchen’s burger, which combines 15-hour pohutakawasmoked brisket with pickled cabbage salad and barbecue sauce, is also among those still on offer.

As is Ministry of Food’s Mega Omega Burger - marinated salmon with kimchi slaw and pickled cucumber - and Coco at The Roxy’s Creole-spiced chicken burger.

At Capitol and WBC, their burgers will remain on their respective menus as long as interest remains high, while Olive is serving its Friar Tuck Burger at lunch only.

Egmont St Eatery will keep serving its buns for at least two weeks, as will Basque Rooftop Bar.

The Greek Food Truck has reinvented its Hercules burger, following feedback it was ‘‘big’’ and ‘‘messy’’.
