Reid steals win for West Ham

- FOOTBALL

Defender Winston Reid fired the winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time as West Ham beat bottom club Sunderland 1-0 in the English Premier League yesterday.

Sunderland, who had picked up just two points from their first eight league games this season, were subjected to an onslaught for much of the game.

The home side looked like they were in for another frustrating afternoon before Reid received the ball from Dimitri Payet and rifled home with a low left-footed shot for the only goal.

‘‘I was a bit surprised to find myself in that position,’’ Reid sad. ‘‘Dimi has got the ball and I fancied him more than me, so I was expecting him to shoot, but he passed it to me. I was aware of the situation, fired off a shot and it went in.’’

Arsenal moved top of the league table but were unconvincing in a 0-0 home draw with Middlesbrough who were well worth their point.

Boro keeper Victor Valdes made a superb save to keep out Alexis Sanchez’s dipping effort before Mesut Ozil had a late goal correctly disallowed for offside for Arsenal.

A fluent Liverpool moved into second with a 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion at Anfield but will rue missing the opportunity to top the table.

Victory by a two-goal margin would have put Juergen Klopp’s side ahead of Arsenal on goals scored and when Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho scored in a rampant first half it looked good for the Reds.

Foster made several saves to keep West Brom in touch before the visitors gained an unlikely lifeline in the 81st minute when Gareth McAuley volleyed home from close range.

Earlier, Tottenham maintained their unbeaten record but were held to a scoreless draw at Bournemouth.

Champions Leicester City left striker Jamie Vardy on the bench but capped a fine week with a third home league win of the season, beating Crystal Palace 3-1 thanks to goals by Ahmed Musa, Shinji Okazaki and Christian Fuchs.

Scott Arfield struck in the 90th minute to earn Burnley an unlikely late, late 2-1 win over Everton at their Turf Moor fortress after the visitors had fought back into the game.

New manager Bob Bradley saw his Swansea side end their streak of four successive Premier League defeats with a 0-0 draw against Watford in his first home match in charge of the Welsh club.

Stoke midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri netted two fine goals to lead his team to a comfortable 2-0 win at struggling Hull City.
