TO THE POINT

l would like to know why us taxpayers should support political parties’ funding. If they want the job, they should raise their own funds.

LEONARD RUMBOLD, Paparangi No-one disagrees with Mayor Justin Lester that Wellington needs more houses. So why not start by looking at aerial photographs to locate the thousands of hectares of available land and then prompting the owners to build or sell? Tripling the rates on vacant land would also help to release it for development. I can point out large tracts that could be subdivided and offered to new home buyers, driving down the cost of a Wellington section.

NEIL HARRAP, Thorndon Can’t say that I have ever been a Labour supporter, but Andrew Little’s gracious response to the announcement that Hekia Parata will not be standing for re-election was quite statesmanlike. Labour may have found the leader it needs so desperately. JOHN MARTIN, Days Bay We can only hope that the awful, awful Tostee/Wright story (Private

night, public view, October 21) will serve as a warning not just to young women but to men also, not to risk this kind of encounter. Remember the tragic Blanche Dubois, in A Streetcar Named

Desire, who ‘‘depended on the kindness of strangers’’, and her horrible end. It seems modern mores require that not only little children but adults too, should know about Stranger Danger.

JULIA du FRESNE, Waipukurau Since changes in GST laws for online services come into effect on November 19, my Netflix price will include a 15 per cent tax. My new price will be $0 per month as I refuse to pay a tax on something that is neither a government service, nor a product made here, or requiring any physical input from the Government. I already pay tax on my internet connection, data usage, etc, and am not importing a real product – just data.
