Contest a ‘perfect storm’

WHAT THE MATCHMAKER THINKS

-

Hall of fame matchmaker Bruce Trampler has described Joseph Parker’s fight with Andy Ruiz as heavyweight boxing’s ‘‘perfect storm’’.

Ruiz’s trainer Abel Sanchez believes the battle for the WBO belt in Auckland on Saturday has the potential to redefine the division.

Trampler, who is the leading matchmaker for Top Rank and acknowledged as one of the best brains in the business, arrived in Auckland yesterday alongside Ruiz.

He noted the historic nature of the fight, with Mexico and New Zealand both looking for their first world heavyweight champions, and felt the explosive styles of Parker and Ruiz should produce something ‘‘sensational’’.

‘‘It’s just like the perfect storm . . . two undefeated guys, two athletic, fast-fighting guys, neither takes a backward step,’’ Trampler said.

‘‘We’re looking forward to a really sensational fight. I can’t think of a better matchup.

‘‘There’s an old saying, ‘there’s two weight classes to boxing – the heavyweights and then there’s everyone else’. This is a really special heavyweight fight and I wouldn’t be surprised if ultimately they fight more than once, this could be that good a fight.’’

Parker’s trainer Kevin Barry continued to push his theory that it will be the fight of the year for the heavyweight division.

Sanchez, who has trained 17 world champions, wasn’t arguing and felt it should signal a welcome return to fast-fisted action.

‘‘I think we have two guys that are the future of the heavyweight division. I think we have two guys who are finally going to show us what heavyweights are actually supposed to fight like, not the wrestling that we have been getting for the last 10-12 years,’’ Sanchez said in a not so subtle attack on the methods of the Klitschko brothers and Tyson Fury.

‘‘We are going to have the kind of fight where they are going to hit each other, hurt each other. That’s the way it should be. It’s evenly matched.’’

While Parker and Ruiz have knockout power, both trainers expected a hard night.

‘‘I think it’s a long fight. We know that both guys are going to attempt to make each other very uncomfortable for this fight,’’ Barry said.
