Martin Crowe (131 innings, 5444 runs at 45.36) Ross Taylor (144 innings, 5938 runs at 46.75) Kane Williamson (105 innings, 4805 runs at 50.57) John Wright (148 innings, 5334 runs at 37.82) Brendon McCullum (176 innings, 6453 runs at 38.64) Nathan Astle (137 innings, 4702 runs at 37.02) their stand, with Taylor’s 77-ball knock relatively sedate compared with Williamson’s 104 not out off 90 balls.

New Zealand’s captain warranted several entries in the ESPNcricinfo stats wrap of the test, as his remarkable fourth innings record continued.

Williamson’s average when chasing in home tests shot up to 231 from six innings. Three of those were unbeaten centuries, 102 not out against South Africa in Wellington 2012, 108 not out against Sri Lanka in Hamilton in 2015 and Monday’s effort. Once again, he scored at a fast clip without it being blatantly obvious how rapidly his score was mounting.

His 89-ball century was the fourth-fastest by a test batsman when chasing. England’s Gilbert Jessop (76 balls against Australia in 1902), Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi (78 balls against West Indies in 2004-05) and Australia’s Matthew Hayden (85 balls against Zimbabwe in 2003-04) were the only ones quicker.

At just 26, and only 57 tests into his career, Williamson could potentially double his century tally - or more - if he continues into his 30s.
