Grape escape
Pinot Palooza, part of Pinot Noir NZ 2017. More than 600 wine aficionados are set to descend on Wellington for Pinot Noir NZ 2017 at the end of this month, providing a welcome reward for any post-Christmas detoxers. Touted as the best event of its kind ‘‘on the planet’’, the tagline seems pretty legit as the three-day long festivity is already sold out, with unprecedented demand calling for extra spaces. An engaging, in-depth showcase of the very best in homegrown produce, the innovative series of talks sees an international sprinkling of over 30 speakers, headlined by hugely influential wine writer Jancis Robinson (OBE, MW); Tool frontman and winery owner Maynard James Keenan; and Ken Ohashi, the world’s only Master of Wine and Sake. A must for every grape geek.
Vin de harbour
Pinot Palooza, the official consumer component to the Pinot Noir NZ 2017 geekfest programme, comes to the capital for the first time on Monday, January 30. Delighting wine-loving Wellingtonians on the waterfront with a whopping 115 wineries, this self-styled ‘‘wine party’’ is a steal at $69, which includes a keepsake wine glass and free tastings from all participating producers. For hardcore fans, the VIP experience includes a food voucher, pre-event entry and a curated tasting with the assistance of knowledgeable sommeliers.
Danish invasion
New Ghuznee St hangout HUSK continues its series of ‘‘Tap Takeovers’’ with some of the world’s best craft brews, before the opening of the Choice Bros brewery next month. Collaborating with Scandinavian sud superstars To ØL, 12 guest beers from Denmark will be available from January 20-26. The pioneering concept aims to introduce imbibers to a range of rare, limited or newly released beers making an international debut. Colorado’s Oskar Blues Brewery will be setting up shop next, with guests from Sweden and the UK to follow in the upcoming weeks.
