A RACY PAIR

Cup Day’s best-dressed couple

- LUCY SWINNEN

An Island Bay couple has reigned supreme at this year’s Wellington Cup Fashion In The Field competition.

Lynne Rait earned the title of Classic Lady of the Carnival on Saturday as well being the supreme winner for her pale pink dress, hat and jacket, which she designed and made herself.

Her partner of 24 years, John Morrow, took out Best Dressed Man for his tartan Barkers suit.

Morrow said he was ‘‘over the moon’’ about Rait’s win and he thought she was definitely the favourite for her top-to-toe caramel and pink outfit.

Of her attire, Rait said: ‘‘When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a princess, but now I’m almost 70 and I’m a fairy godmother.’’

As for Morrow, he was wearing an Addington suit inspired by Rait’s family tartan.

Rait said the Black Watch tartan was a popular knit because ‘‘it doesn’t show blood’’ and soldiers could sneak around in it.

The couple won a trip for two to Victoria Racing Club’s Crown Oaks race day, including three nights at Rydges Melbourne, as well as entry into the Prix de Fashion Finals in Auckland.

Wellington Cup Day’s prize for Contemporary Lady of the Carnival went to Claudia Campbell, of Cambridge, for her seagull-inspired outfit.

The Maiden of the Carnival title went to Lower Hutt’s Beverley Robinson for her bird-inspired Ted Baker dress and feather caplet.

Just over 10,000 people turned out for Saturday’s raceday.
