The coast with the most

-

With its beautiful beaches and slightly warmer climate than the capital, the Kapiti Coast is an easy option for those with a day off this summer.

The Kapiti Coast offers a relaxed day trip from Wellington, with Paekakariki – the first town you hit – less than an hour’s drive or train from the central city.

If you’re in need of a spot of exercise after your brief commute to the coast, head up to the Paekakariki Escarpment track.

While the entire 9.45-kilometre walkway takes three to four hours per leg, you can choose to stop and turn around at any point while marvelling at the surrounding view.

Once you’re back in the car, cruise for 25 minutes to Waikanae and grab some sustenance in the form of French pastries and coffee from the Olde Beach Bakery on Ono St.

After you’ve had your fill of buttery delights, it’s time to hit the beach.

While the water might still be a bit chilly for a swim, Waikanae Beach is a perfect spot for a leisurely walk, taking in healthy amounts of sea air as you go.

Keep an eye out for seabirds, including terns, oystercatchers and shags – all of which are often seen in the area.

Remember, a beach getaway wouldn’t be complete without fish and chips, so make sure you stop in Paraparaumu for a bite on your way home.

Raumati Fish Supply was voted one of the top 10 picks in the region with its fillets made from fish cauht locally each morning and hand-cut chips guaranteed to satisfy.

Once you’re full of salty food and sea air, hop in your car and return to the city.
