HNZ’s vision for Johnsonville complex
Housing New Zealand has released a sketch of what a proposed 21-unit apartment block in Johnsonville would look like.
The new apartments in Frankmoore Ave will replace a 12-unit complex that was demolished last year because of earthquake concerns.
The new homes will be fully insulated, warm, dry, and filled with light, HNZ said.
Consent has been lodged for the development, but has not yet been granted.
Construction is expected to begin mid-2017.
Ohariu MP Peter Dunne said it was great the apartments were expected to go ahead because there had been fears that HNZ might get rid of the land after demolishing the previous complex.
There was always a shortage for particular types of housing, but he understood the apartments being replaced had usually been full of long-term residents.
‘‘I’m very pleased. Housing New Zealand has done some innovative things in housing in the last few years.’’
He would like to see more social housing made available where appropriate.
The new homes have been designed by architects Jerram Tocker Barron and they will be in three separate complexes, each with seven townhouse-style apartments.
The new homes exemplified HNZ’s commitment to providing high-quality housing, which met the demands of today’s families, and would meet ongoing demand, said Patrick Dougherty, HNZ general manager of asset development.
HNZ would stay in touch with the community during the process of getting the apartments built, and would keep construction noise and disruption to a minimum with traffic management planning.
‘‘We’re also talking to the community about our plans, to make sure everyone is well informed and they can contact us directly if they have any questions ...” Dougherty said.
