Hutt River’s scenic cycle trail suitable for all ages

- COLIN WILLIAMS

One of the many strengths of the Hutt Valley River Trail is that it offers plenty of entry and exit points to meet the needs of riders of all ages and abilities.

This riverbank ride is safe and scenic. It is perfect for family groups and younger riders and, as I know, for anyone rediscovering the joy of cycling.

Several years ago, I found myself back in the saddle and discovered that the trail, away from roads and traffic, was ideal for getting used to bike handling and for gradually lengthening my time and distances.

The Hutt River Trail runs from the river mouth on Hikoikoi Reserve at Petone and finishes at Te Marua, 29 kilometres one way (and call it 60 for both).

Riders and walkers can enter the trail at many points. So there’s bound to be an access point handy, with car parking too.

And while falling off a bike is ‘‘as easy as’’, it should not happen on what is a flat ride.

Yes, there are occasional bumps and an overall slight uphill trend up the valley but nothing significant so young and inexperienced riders can expect trouble-free kilometres.

The trail is signposted with regular kilometre indicators, route maps identifying entry and exit points, and information on toilet and rest areas.

Developed by the Hutt Valley Rotary Club and Greater Wellington Regional Council from the 1990s, the trail has a mix of surfaces.

From the south, it is sealed before it becomes gravel near Taita and through the more challenging north of Stokes Valley passage to Upper Hutt where there are grassy areas.
