Weepu says adieu to Talula

- STAFF REPORTER

Like the All Blacks? Classic cars? Got a spare $55,000 lying around? Then boy, has Trade Me got the deal for you.

Former All Black Piri Weepu is selling his blue 1967 Ford Galaxie, named Talula, on the auction site, with a starting price of $55,000 or nearest offer.

‘‘With a heavy heart I’m selling my ride,’’ Weepu wrote on Twitter on Tuesday, linking to the Trade Me listing.

Judging by the advert, it seems Weepu, now living in France, is reluctant to give up the 8-cylinder automatic, with 39,830 kilometres on the clock, a current registration and WOF, and a brand new stereo head unit.

The listing says he named the classic Ford ‘‘Talula’’ after the sled from 1993 bobsleigh comedy film Cool Runnings.

Weepu wrote: ‘‘I bought Talula 10 years ago. After taking her for a test drive I fell in love with the sound she made. It was nothing I had heard before while driving a vehicle, and the reflection you see in a shop window when driving is pretty gangsta!’’

The car, which bears the numberplate ‘‘KRU5IN’’, clearly holds many memories for Weepu, who wrote in the listing: ‘‘She’s been good to me on those mint summer days. She’s taken a few people to church to tie the knot, a few teens to their school balls, and generally brings a smile to the face of anyone who jumps in.’’

The halfback, originally from Lower Hutt, played for the All Blacks between 2004 and 2013.

He moved to Europe in 2014 after his final season with the Blues and now plays for Narbonne, in France’s second division.
