Wairarapa United sign Lindsay

- ILLYA MCLELLAN

Wairarapa United looked to have pulled off a bit of a coup with the signing of talented midfielder Cameron Lindsay for the 2017 winter season.

Lindsay is currently playing for Tasman United in the Stirling Sports Premiership and is looking to continue to get game time in the Central Premier League in an effort to get a fulltime professional deal.

When Lindsay signed for Blackburn Rovers in 2009 his career looked like it was really taking off. The Lancashire based side were at that time in the English Premier League managed by Sam Allardyce.

Unfortunately for Lindsay a series of events transpired to turn things on their head and leave him heading back to New Zealand having not realised his Premier League dream.

On returning to these shores Lindsay signed with Wellington Phoenix where he remained for two years before moving on to Team Wellington in the New Zealand National League.

Since then he has played for Auckland City and was part of the side that made a fairy-tale run to the 2014 World Club Cup semi-final in Morocco.

Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley believes Lindsay is just the type of player the club need to strengthen the squad but also for the reason his experience can help out others in the set up.

‘‘He’s an intelligent player who wants to play football, which is what we’d like to do here at United. It’s really about having strength through the squad and having depth throughout a season.

‘‘We are glad we have kept players from last year on board like Paul Ifill, Sam Mason-Smith and Cory Chettleburgh and we are bringing in the likes of Cameron and others like Fiji under 20’s Jeshal Kumar. We’ve also managed to this season get Carl Shailer, Seulle Soromon and Dale Higham back who have all played here before,’’ he said.

Lindsay is positive about the move and is looking forward to helping out friend Ifill with his academy as well as continuing to develop his game and working toward getting another professional contract.

‘‘I’m committed to moving forward. I think they are assembling a good side at Wairarapa and it looks as if we might be able to put in a real challenge for the league and maybe even get a bit of a cup run in,’’ he said.
