Big two continue their dominance

-

Premier interclub tennis resumed on Saturday with Tawa-Lyndhurst and Thorndon proving just as dominant as pre-Christmas.

Both men’s sides dropped one match apiece in opening round victories.

It started shakily for TawaLyndhurst whose No 2 Marcel Glover was hampered by a shoulder injury and retired early to Miramar’s Robbie Barnsley after losing the first set 6-4.

Glover later returned to the court for the doubles, serving underarm but doing enough in partnership with Michael McGlinchey to take the win against Barnsley and Josh Hampton 6-3 6-4.

Olly Sadler was pushed to three sets by Miramar’s Jaden Grinter 6-2 3-6 6-2, and again in the doubles alongside Francis Glover 6-2 4-6 10-3 against Grinter and Daniel Hawk.

Thorndon’s only loss to Waikanae Beach came from Pat Metham up against Kieren Rooney, who won 6-2 6-3. Thorndon made short work of all other matches in straight sets.

In the women’s premier division it was a listless start for preChristmas runners-up Khandallah who were upset by TawaLyndhurst on a 3-3 countback.

Ivy McLean beat Maggie Dai 6-1 6-0 but her Khandallah team-mates lost the remaining singles.

Paraparaumu Beach were lucky to clinch two of their singles which both went the distance, with Thorndon’s No 1 Tamara Anderson pushing Leela Beattie in three 6-4 0-6 6-4.

Antonia Lawson also came out on top against Jourdan Craig 7-6 2-6 6-1.

Lower Hutt beat Wellington 5-1 assisted by a default in No 4 singles and bottom doubles. Julie Scott lost to Christie Robinson 6-3 7-5.

Teams are vying for a spot in the premier grand final determined by the highest combined points from both pre and postChristmas competitions.
