... will DRS or weather intervene?

- AARON GOILE

Having come so far towards pulling off a stunning test victory over South Africa, the Black Caps will be desperately hoping they’re not left caught short by either their continued DRS dramas, or yet another dodgy weather forecast, as they head into today’s final day.

With the DRS, at least, New Zealand have dug themselves another hole, with captain Kane Williamson again proving to be an enigma in cricketing judgment – so splendid and watchful with bat in hand during his masterful 176 – yet so off target when sending umpires’ decisions upstairs.

Having already had a shocking time of it in the first test in Dunedin, then in the first innings at Seddon Park, New Zealand again used up the two reviews they’re allowed in 80 overs, in quick fashion in the second innings.

A caught behind appeal for JP Duminy off Matt Henry – who wasn’t interested – was kept not out, with a clear gap between bat and ball; then soon later another caught behind off Duminy, from Neil Wagner, was unsuccessfully reviewed, with the ball only making contact with his backside.

It’s enough for Jeetan Patel to wonder if the team is actually better off giving them the flick altogether.

‘‘We’re almost better off not having them, to be honest with you,’’ Patel said.

Meanwhile, on the weather front, Met-Service has been a far from creditable source all week, with rain, or at least showers, forecast across every day, only for the sun to be out in force.

Today’s prediction is ‘‘a few showers, chance heavy, easing evening’’.

‘‘I’m not having a dig at Apple here, but the iPhone app had 100 per cent thunderstorms all afternoon yesterday [Monday] and we didn’t get any of it,’’ Patel said.

‘‘So it’s a bit Hamilton-like. It comes and goes, it can go all round us.’’
