Sue Moroney to step down as MP

-

Labour’s Sue Moroney will say goodbye to Parliament at election time.

The Hamilton-based MP has spent 12 years in Parliament but yesterday announced her decision not to run again at September’s election.

‘‘I made my decision after being notified last night that I had lost support from the party’s ruling council for an electable position on the Labour Party’s list,’’ she said in a statement.

‘‘I’m proud to have extended paid parental leave, achieved mandated meal breaks and rest periods for workers and fought early childhood education cuts amongst other things.

‘‘Many people have given me invaluable support in these endeavours.’’

Moroney intends to stay for the rest of her term. She is currently Labour’s spokesperson for transport, ACC and associate spokesperson for workplace relations and safety.

In her statement, she said it was an honour to represent Labour Party members and to advocate for the people of Hamilton.

She also relished the chance to fight for the rights of children, working families, women and Hamilton residents.

‘‘I now look forward to spending more time with my amazing family and friends to plan the next chapter of my life in pursuing equality and social justice.’’

Labour leader Andrew Little said Moroney was hard-working and dedicated, and could be proud of her achievements in Parliament.

‘‘Sue campaigned tirelessly for a fairer deal for parents over paid parental leave and fought for greater protections for workers.

‘‘More recently, she has been an energetic spokesperson on transport and ACC issues, and worked hard advocating for the people of Hamilton.’’

Little’s statement said he understood why Moroney stood down and wished her all the best.
