Tempting massive Pick6
Punters will chase a Pick6 pool that could boost past $500,000 on Saturday.
In around 90 minutes the six legs will be run to determine if anyone can unravel the form and strike it lucky.
The six legs across two meetings include two black-type races, the Northland Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Ruakaka and the Metric Mile (1550m) at Awapuni.
The clash of 3-year-old stars , the filly Prom Queen and the gelding Felton Road in the age group Breeders Stakes will be one of the highlights of the day while Felton Road’s Tony Pike-trained stablemate Aim Smart is also high class.
Pike reports they worked well together on Tuesday morning and he is happy with their progress.
Felton Road has had a winning run under his belt while his stablemate hasn’t raced since February and goes into his freshup run without a trial.
‘‘He’s had a couple of jumpouts and has done plenty of work,’’ Pike said.
‘‘Felton Road has done well since his win at Te Rapa - they should both run well.’’
Standing in their way is the flying machine Prom Queen, trained on the Ruakaka track by Ken and Lisa Rae and Krystal Williams.
‘‘We’re expecting another big effort,’’ Rae said of his winner of six races from seven starts. ‘‘Her work has been good.’’
Fellow Ruakaka trainers Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs have two runners in the race who could be the giant killers.
The lightly-raced Dashper has been kept fresh for the $70,000 race while Not Usual Heart is deemed good enough to make her debut in stakes company.
‘‘Dashper always showed us quite a lot,’’ Logan said. ‘‘We do think a fair bit of Not Usual Heart.’’
Francaletta ($2.10) is the one that will be on almost every Pick6 ticket with the question being around her ability to cope with 1550m second up in the Group III Metric Mile at Awapuni.
‘‘It will be a big test,’’ said Murray Baker who trains the mare with Andrew Forsman. ‘‘But she’s classy and has done well since her Hastings win.
With a substantial carryforward of $239,985.15, Saturday’s Pick6 is guaranteed to reach a massive $500,000.
The Pick6 will be turbo charged which means it will run across the last three races at each of Saturday’s domestic thoroughbred meetings, Awapuni and Ruakaka.
