Lions become rugby superheroes for charity
They are already heroes to many, but on Sunday, the Wellington Lions will become superheroes.
The rugby team’s players will wear superhero-styled tops for their annual Wellington Children’s Hospital charity game against Otago.
They will also flip a one-off, silver ‘‘Bravery Coin’’ during the pre-match coin toss, which will later be auctioned along with their jerseys. All funds will be donated to the children’s hospital.
Lions players Julian Savea, Brad Shields and Jackson GardenBachop visited the children’s hospital yesterday – decked out in their special superhero attire – to put smiles on faces.
Shields said it was something the squad was particularly proud of, supporting the children’s hospital year after year. ‘‘It’s always humbling to visit the children’s ward and inspiring to see the courage of the patients and their parents, as well as the work the staff do.
‘‘To make a small contribution is a real privilege. The charity jerseys look great and we’re looking forward to wearing them.’’
The Village Goldsmith made the special bravery coin for the match, and has produced a number of ‘‘Bravery Medals’’ for the young patients. The medals are also for sale online.
Money raised from selling these medals will go towards the Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital medical equipment fund.
The Wellington team is on a golden run of form in the Mitre 10 Cup. The Lions are way out in front of the championship, earning 32 points in seven matches.
Following Sunday’s game against Otago at Westpac Stadium, the player’s jerseys and the bravery coin will be auctioned on Trade Me.
