Lizzie L’Amour to miss Caulfield Cup

- TIM RYAN

Luck has deserted top-class mare Lizzie L’Amour during her Victorian campaign.

Her high-flying trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman have decided they will not accept with Lizzie L’Amour in Saturday’s Caulfield Cup.

Their Group I winner was found to have suffered a heart fibrillation after her seventh place finish in the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes before finishing sixth in the W H Stocks Stakes at Moonee Valley.

She beat only two home in Sunday’s Cranbourne Cup (2025m) and connections are keen to get her back to her true form.

It will be left to stablemates Bonneval and Jon Snow to fly the Kiwi flag in the A$3 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) on Saturday, though topweight Humidor has New Zealanders among his owners.

‘‘Her preparation has been a bit back to front after her fibrillation and we couldn’t go for the races we had planned,’’ Forsman said. ‘‘She’s had no luck so we are looking at a run in the Geelong Cup next.’’

If the mare ran well in that, the stable would still consider a Melbourne Cup run. ‘‘I’m sure the owners would love to have a go.’’

Seventeen runners accepted for the Caulfield Cup, with Darren Weir represented by Amelie’s Star, as well as Humidor, though his Japanese import Admire Deus has been ruled out of the spring carnival with a serious leg injury.

Dual Caulfield Cup-winning jockey Craig Williams was due to ride Admire Deus but has now been booked for Amelie’s Star, leaving former Kiwi apprentice Michael Dee, who was named on Monday as the mare’s rider, out in the cold.
