The key MPs in Labour leader’s inner circle
Kelvin Davis: Her deputy and an important link to her large Ma¯ori caucus, as well as the NZ First team led by Winston Peters.
Grant Robertson: The Government’s strategy kingpin who, as finance minister, will have a hand in every decision. But he is also a close friend of Ardern and the two have been a complementary political yin and yang. He will have four associates spread across the three governing parties to help unify Budget planning and strategy. Megan Woods: Sixth-ranked and brings a strong intellect to the table. Minister for things Christchurch, her presence ensures a South Island voice at the top table. Andrew Little: Ardern has loaded up her predecessor with the heavyweight legal portfolios like justice and Treaty settlements. One of her most trusted lieutenants with a relationship forged when he was leader and she his deputy.
Chris Hipkins: Another who has worked closely with Ardern previously. As Leader of the House, he will manage the Government’s parliamentary programme and also holds the important levers of state services and ministerial services.
Phil Twyford: Effectively the minister for Auckland, via his housing and transport portfolios. The man at the wheel of the KiwiBuild and state house programme. David Parker: Carrying a heavy workload, including Attorney-General, economic development and trade. Provides intellectual heft and key links to NZ First and the Green Party, through his economic and environmental portfolios.
