A recipe for a nice profit

AN AWARD-WINNING franchise bakery cafe with nearly 25,000 loyal customers is for sale in Porirua. Muffin Break, at Kiosk 16, in the North City Shopping Centre, is one of 42 cafes that have spread across the country since 1994.

Muffin Break North City stands out for not only its profitability but also its profile, having featured on TVNZ 1’s Breakfast show after winning the annual Muffin Break NZ coffee making competition three years in a row (2014-2016).

It also won the overall title in the international version of Muffin Break’s coffee competition in Australia, where it represented NZ.

‘‘This store has built a massive following of loyal customers through constantly delivering top-quality product, exceptional service and even better coffee,’’ Tony Shalders, of ABC Business Sales, says.

It’s in a high foot traffic zone, at the bottom of the travelator on the ground level of the shopping centre, and has a 3400-strong customer database and 24,700 loyalty card members.

‘‘The Muffin Break Club loyalty membership scheme rewards customers with exclusive benefits like every fifth coffee free, birthday offers and private member-only deals and discounts,’’ Shalders says.

The store employs 7 fulltime staff and eight part-timers, and trades from 9am-6pm MondaySaturday, and from 10am Sundays, with the vendor working 30-40 hours a week. In 2017 it generated a weekly turnover of $26,000 and over the last three years its EBPITDA has improved from $158,847 to $203,517.

‘‘This is the first time in ten years a Wellington Region Muffin Break has hit the open market,’’ Shalders says.

The business has an asking price of $690,000 (plus stock of about $10,000).
