AN ISLAND BAY home that had been in the same family for more than 30 years has been auctioned for $230,000 above its rateable value.

The property, at 16 Travancore St, had a rateable value of $670,000 and sold for $900,000.

Built in the 1930s, the 209-square-metre dwelling was on a 765sqm section with off-street parking and a single garage.

‘‘It was easy to see why this gracious 1930s home was so hard for the owners to let go,’’ says Erin Rush, of Harcourts, who marketed it with Nigel Solomon.

‘‘It had five bedrooms, two bathrooms and art deco features such as Carrara ceilings, native timber architraves and joinery, leadlight windows and the solidity of an era where homes were built to last.’’

The kitchen and dining area were open-plan, the formal living room had a modern gas fire, and the sunroom opened to the sunny, fenced lawn and garden.
