TO THE POINT

I arrived at Wellington Airport this week only to discover I had left my wallet in Auckland. When I explained my predicament to the driver of the Flyer bus he asked if I had a GoldCard. On hearing that was also in Auckland he offered me a free ride into the city, where I was able to arrange emergency finance. What wonderful service. There are certainly some decent people in this world.

What a fool the one-legged shoplifter is (One-legged shoplifter caught on CCTV, May 4). Doesn’t he realise that he may be able to hide – but he can‘t run?

I have to agree with Rongotai MP Paul Eagle. The new buses are just awful. Before we paint or cover too many please rethink the branding. On the trains it works OK, but the buses are simply hideous

Chris Gray, Newtown Just a thought, why are bicycles allowed on the open road without rear vision mirrors. all other vehicles have to have them. Lloyd Stevens, Martinborough

Energy Minister Megan Woods tells us we are paying over the odds at the pump. She’s right, but her beat-up is simply an attempt to distract us hapless victims from her Government’s unprecedented tax take that far exceeds the base price of petrol, let alone any oil company profit margin.

Where’s Joe Bennett been in the last 50 years to have not known that the letters in ABBA were the first letters in their Christian names? Everybody knows that, but not everybody appreciates as he does, the magnificence of their music and melodies.

The Australian Government is deporting to New Zealand, criminals with no real connection to New Zealand who have turned into criminals in the Australian environment. So one can only asssume that Australia is admitting that they have done an extremely poor job of teaching these individuals to be good citizens and so are sending the them to New Zealand because they think we are more able to turn the criminals’ lives around. Thanks for the implied compliment, Australia, but we’d prefer you did the job yourself.

The local authority funding model is broken. When was it last reviewed as fit for purpose? What other models are there? The Government $1 billion Regional Development Fund, new levies being set by central and local governments, are surely evidence that the current and singular rates-on-property model is broken.
