Buy a Masterton masterpiece

-

TENDERS close on May 25 for a sublimely renovated Victorian homestead in Masterton. The five-bedroom residence, at

183 Willow Park Drive, combines historic splendour and an idyllic setting with rural and mountain views in one of the Wairarapa town’s most sought-after lifestyle locations.

While it looks as if the 458-square-metre villa has been part of the picturesque landscape since it was built in the 1890s, it was only moved to its two-hectare site from Whanganui 12 years ago.

As well as completely refurbishing and subtly modernising the single-level dwelling, the owners have landscaped the flat and sunny grounds to maximise their elegant home’s indoor-outdoor living advantages.

A rolling lawn, formal garden beds with buxus hedging, and roses complement the era of the architecture while the in-ground, solar-heated salt-water swimming pool is tailor-made for Masterton’s hot summers.

One of the weatherboard-and-Colorsteel roof house’s many special features is its exceptionally long, north-facing veranda. It has four substantial bay windows and can be accessed from the two living rooms, the dining room and kitchen, billiards room and two of the bedrooms.

All the living and dining areas, the main bedroom suite and two more doublebedrooms are on the northern side while the other bedrooms, family bathroom, separate toilet and separate laundry face south.

Stunning tin ceilings distinguish many of the rooms (including the grand hall that spans the length of the house), the entrance, kitchen and billiards room have polished floorboards, and the living/dining rooms and bedrooms are carpeted.

The kitchen also has an electric range with gas burners, rangehood, dishwasher, designer spotlights and breakfast bar.

The main bedroom is at the western end of the house and includes a tin ceiling, walk-in wardrobe and large ensuite.

The even more spacious family bathroom has a bath, shower cabinet, vanity, toilet and cork floor tiles for softness and warmth.

Other features include high ceilings and colonial skirting boards, cottage doors, leadlights, a log burner in the living room, ample storage in the laundry, radiator heating throughout, a security system and an internalaccess double garage. There’s also a separate three-bay implement shed.

‘‘This exquisite home offers a lifestyle as amazing as its character,’’ Carolyn Collier, of Property Brokers, says.

‘‘It’s in a prime location only minutes from town and is close to the highly-regarded Rathkeale College.’’

The property has a rateable value of $1.155 million.
