Wrong-way driving ‘insane’

- Stephanie Mitchell

A car clipped another while barrelling down a Wellington motorway in the wrong direction for two kilometres.

More than 20 members of the public called police about 5pm on Saturday after spotting the small white car travelling north on the southbound lanes in Tawa, according to police.

The car is estimated to have travelled the wrong way for 2km, clipping another car, which caused that car to then clip another.

Eventually, the white car did a U-turn back into the correct lanes.

Police confirmed yesterday that the driver of the car had still not been found.

Ben Huijs said he was driving on the motorway when he spotted the car driving towards him.

‘‘We were driving towards it and avoided it . . . but another car saw it and swerved in front of us.

‘‘I was surprised more than anything about it being on the other side of the road, and we all sort of freaked out when the car cut us off, and were even more freaked out about the cars that were involved.’’

Anna-Win Mason commented on Facebook that she had also been on the road with the driver.

‘‘We almost crashed our car because of that insane driver! Absolutely dangerous behaviour! Luckily saw them in time, and the car stopped just in front of them.

‘‘It was getting dark with heavy rain at the time this incident happened.’’

Police are making inquiries and are seeking further information from the public.
