Beach Cafe & Kiosk

-

We’d heard… It’s famous for its rotating menus to match the seasons.

We ordered… Wellington put on a stunning day so we headed down to the South Coast local.

Before making our way through the 13-plate menu, we ordered a long black, a flat white, and a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. The coffee hit the spot, not too strong nor bitter. The flat white was silky smooth, presented with love heart swirls. And you can’t go wrong with freshly squeezed OJ.

We ordered the breakfast burger ($25). Stacked inside its sweet brioche-like burger was the andouille patty with smoked cheddar, fried egg (with runny yolk), caramelised onions, and bacon jam. Dressing the plate were roasted duck fat potatoes with aioli.

You get the classic burger but with class. The patty was well-cooked, the egg was perfect and the sauces weren’t dripping out the back of the burger. The potatoes were crispy and a nice change to regular french fries.

The baked thyme ricotta ($21) is a vegetarian and gluten-free dish that came with sauteed spinach, brussels sprouts, broccoli, toasted almonds, and lemon jus. The textures on this plate complemented each other perfectly.

We were left satisfied but not stuffed. Lastly, we ordered the chicken and nduja pie ($24), mainly because we were so curious about nduja – an exotic salami from Italy.

Spice-roasted yams sat at the bottom of the stacked dish in gravy. The pie rested on the yams with a green salad crowning the pie.

Full of moist chicken, we searched for the ‘‘exotic salami’’ without success. Despite that, the pie was delicious, filling and satisfying.

The service… Quick and attentive.

The vibe… Beachy cafe with a dash of class.

If you go… Try the desserts, they looked divine.
