Newtown Mall set for upgrade

-

Newtown Mall in Wellington is about to have a major revamp but it is unclear what will happen to many businesses that trade out of there.

The mall is owned by Foodstuffs, which confirmed its New World supermarket would continue to operate throughout the seismic strengthening and revamp – expected to run till June 2019. It could not say what would happen to other retailers.

An artist’s impression of the revamped mall shows what appears to be a wood-veneer facade, as well as nikau palms in planter boxes dotted along Riddiford St.

A statement by Foodstuffs said it was using the earthquake strengthening works to have a ‘‘comprehensive makeover’’.

‘‘We have some exciting plans to turn the mall into a modern, fresh shopping precinct with some new retail and delicious, new dining options.’’

While the supermarket, at the rear of the mall, would stay open throughout, the company apologised for the scaffolding and other construction activity that shoppers would have to deal with.

Foodstuffs was talking to other retailers about whether they would remain in the mall.

Newtown Residents’ Association President Rhona Carson said the refurbishment was a good thing, especially as it involved seismic strengthening. She hoped retailers would make arrangements to get through the process.

Foodstuffs would not say how much the project would cost.
