‘Bad’ girls and boys certain to have a ball
Dust off your glad rags – a ball is coming to town, and it’s going to be ‘‘bad’’.
The Kauri Theatre Company and charity Stroke Central Region have teamed up to deliver a grand ball – although probably not one Cinderella would attend.
Part fundraising for Kauri Theatre’s upcoming production of Bad Girls: The Musical, part fundraising for support agency Stroke Central, the Bad Girls (and Boys) Ball is set to raise money – and awareness.
‘‘Kauri Theatre is a community-formed company and our first production is going to be held next month. But what we thought we would do is a fundraising and awareness campaign, so this year we approached Stroke Central to go for a joint ball,’’ theatre company secretary Bonita Edwards said.
‘‘Basically it’s a ball, so it’s a chance to put your glad rags on.’’
The night, held on August 24, is set to be more than just dinner and dancing.
Some of the cast members will be at the ball, dressed up and ready to serve – in character, of course, and there will be a live band and spot prizes handed out.
Fundraising will not be the only benefit of the ball though. Edwards said it was just as much about raising awareness for Stroke Central.
Kauri Theatre is a new company on the arts scene in the Wellington region and aims to promote diversity and integrity as part of its culture.
All going well, Edwards said they hoped they would be able to do something similar in the future and make the charity ball a regular thing.
They are hoping to draw in around 80 to 100 people for the ball, which will be held at The Boatshed on Jervois Quay.
Stroke Central was offering tickets at half price for all stroke survivors, to give them a ‘‘good night out’’, Edwards said.
Kauri Theatre’s first production Bad Girls: The Musical is based on the British television programme of the same name, telling the story of inmates and guards inside Larkhall Prison.
The musical is due to show at the Gryphon Theatre from September 12.
