Just weeks out from their royal visit to New Zealand, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have revealed they are expecting a baby.

Kensington Palace announced the news via Twitter last night.

‘‘Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that the Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the spring of 2019,’’ the palace posted.

The announcement came as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry arrived in Sydney at the start of a 16-day visit to Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand.

The trip officially begins today, and the couple will watch the Invictus Games, visit a Sydney zoo and the Flying Doctor rural service.

During their New Zealand trip, they will visit Wellington, Abel Tasman National Park, Auckland and Rotorua.

On October 28, they will be officially welcomed at Wellington’s Government House before heading to Pukeahu National War Memorial Park for a wreathlaying ceremony, and to view the UK War Memorial.

Later that evening, they will attend a reception hosted by the Governor-General, Dame Patsy Reddy, celebrating the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand.

On October 29, they will visit Wellington’s Maranui Cafe to meet young people from the mental health sector.
