Mundine hits out at Lonergan

- Boxing

Anthony Mundine appears to have a special brand of disdain for Jeff Horn’s promoter Dean Lonergan, calling him a ‘‘despicable human being’’ and suggesting his sledging will be the cause of his fighter’s downfall.

Lonergan was the one that said he would rather drink ‘‘six cups of warm sick’’ than see Horn fight Mundine as a comeback bout in the wake of defeat at the hands of Terence Crawford in Las Vegas earlier in the year.

Yet here we are, with both men well into their preparations for a 71kg catchweight bout in Brisbane on November 30, a Friday night that Mundine is convinced will see him retire from the game with perhaps his biggest domestic scalp.

Lonergan has made it clear that Mundine has been difficult during the negotiations for the fight and expressed his displeasure at the veteran’s decision to train in Florida instead of promoting the local bout.

Mundine returned home for an open session in Sydney on Tuesday and then turned his sights on Lonergan, saying he wished it was the former Kiwi rugby league player in the ring, not Horn. ‘‘I wish Lonergan was taking the punches. I would knock that head straight off his shoulders,’’ Mundine said.

‘‘I don’t like Dean. I think he’s a despicable human being as far as his honour, his word, his integrity. He’s got none. And he tries to tell me what to do. I do what I want to do.’’
