$8.9m school block opens
Newtown School in Wellington is moving from inward to outward facing with the opening of an $8.9 million teaching block.
The main teaching block at the school was demolished in 2012 when it was found to be earthquake prone.
Newtown School Principal Mark Brown said it was an exciting time for the school.
‘‘We now have amazing flexible learning spaces – built to the highest level for standards of sound, light and air conditions available in New Zealand.’’
Staff had worked from temporary working spaces during the construction. ‘‘Our staff and students are enjoying their new space.’’
The new block provides 14 new flexible teaching spaces.
Education Minister Chris Hipkins joined Newtown School staff, students and community yesterday to celebrate the formal opening.
The Ministry of Education worked with the school to design the new block, Hipkins said.
‘‘The school was founded in 1879, one of the earliest schools established in the country.
‘‘The opening of this fantastic teaching space marks a new chapter in Newtown School’s long and proud history,’’ Hipkins said. Like many old school buildings, the school was built to face away from the street and was inward looking.
‘‘The new building includes a new entrance which is outward looking – facing one of Newtown’s main streets – reflecting the diversity of its community.’’
