Second Eminem gig looking shady

- Katarina Williams katarina.williams@stuff.co.nz

The possibility of Eminem coming back for a second Wellington show next year looks ‘‘less likely’’, Westpac Stadium chief executive Shane Harmon says.

All 45,000 tickets to the rap superstar’s first gig in the capital on Saturday, March 2 – part of his Rapture 2019 tour – were snapped up in less than an hour.

The lightning speed of last month’s ticket grab triggered promoters to set up a waitlist to gauge whether there was enough interest for a second concert the following night.

But with four weeks having now passed without a repeat performance from the 15-time Grammy award-winner being signed off, Harmon was not holding out much hope.

‘‘The promoter has said they would inform us if this changes but, given the passing of time, my view is it’s less likely,’’ he said.

Ticketless fans who thought they may be able to head across the Tasman to catch Eminem in Melbourne, Perth, Sydney or Brisbane may also be out of luck.

‘‘All shows have sold out on this tour and we have been informed that there are no second dates planned in any city at this stage,’’ Harmon said.

‘‘The initial interest from our perspective was due to Wellington being the first to sell out but all other venues sold out soon afterwards.’’

Promotion company TEG Dainty in Australia was approached for comment by Stuff.

A second gig could have provided Wellington hospitality groups and retailers a potentially lucrative second bite of the cherry, with 25,000 fans descending on the city for the first concert.

Most accommodation in the capital was already snapped up before tickets reached general sale.

Eminem’s only other previous New Zealand concert, at Auckland’s Western Springs Stadium in 2014, was that venue’s fastestselling show, and produced the largest audience seen there since the 1980s.
