Anyone who has spent significant time in New Zealand in recent years has undoubtedly noticed the growth in tourism. Many overseas visitors and increasingly more Kiwis than ever are exploring their own backyard.
As travel becomes ever more accessible and more people are inspired to wander to new places, the impact on environments such as New Zealand’s are noticeable.
To counter this reality, some of the most powerful tourism leaders in Aotearoa have banded together to launch a creative initiative – The Tiaki Promise.
Tiaki is a powerful and diverse word in te reo Ma¯ ori, meaning to care and protect and to look after people and place.
The Tiaki Promise is a commitment to care for New Zealand, for now and for future generations, looking after this incredible part of the world, by inspiring Kiwis to protect their land, and for tourists to understand they are also guardians of the places they visit.
It instils a sense of responsibility within to commit to good behaviour.
Respecting the culture while travelling, with an open heart and open mind, is another key feature of the Tiaki Promise.
New Zealand is a modern and multicultural country, with endless opportunities to educate all types of travellers on our diversity and rich history, especially those with little experience or understanding of Ma¯ ori culture.
Be open and curious but respectful. Look for opportunities for shared authentic experiences when travelling, where you can learn and grow – NZ Ma¯ ori Tourism is a great place to start looking for all types of opportunities when travelling in the country.
By treading lightly and leaving no trace where you go, not harassing wildlife, and looking after the land and sea, you’re looking after the country for future generations. The same goes for when you see irresponsible behaviour or observe people wildly unprepared.
Just talking about it increases awareness, and discussing it in a positive way produces better results. After all, many people aren’t aware they’re unprepared or doing something wrong. Don’t be afraid to be vocal when you see an opportunity to educate someone around these ideas – it could save lives.
Most foreign travellers in New Zealand want to do the right thing, but often are unaware of our differences. Locals should demonstrate good behaviour so they can inspire everyone to be guardians of this great land.
One major part of the Tiaki Promise is about travelling safely and showing care and consideration for all.
This can be interpreted in many ways, but as more cars travel on our often challenging roads, it means it’s more important than ever to drive safely and be prepared for all conditions and all weather.
