December’s must-see TV

- James Croot james.croot@stuff.co.nz

IDecember television viewing used to only mean one thing – festive programming. And, after the reality shows wind up for the year, you won’t be short of options when it comes to Christmas specials and oftrepeated movies.

But there’s also plenty to get excited about coming to a screen near you.

Netflix has a crop of new movies – Andy Serkis’ Jungle Book-adaptation Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (December 7), the already critically acclaimed Roma (December 14) and Sandra Bullock horror Bird Box (December 21) – as well as captured ‘‘live performances’’ from Ellen DeGeneres (December 18) and Bruce Springsteen (December 16).

Elsewhere, Three welcomes back Jono and Ben for a two-part Big Stupid Quiz (from December 13) and Prime revisits the day the music died in Buddy Holly – Rave On (December 12).

However, after looking at the line-ups for next month, Stuff has come up with the six television events we’re most looking forward to before New Year’s Day. Five-part BBC adaptation of Wilkie Collins’ 1859 novel, which was considered one of the world’s first detective tales.

Dougray Scott, Ben Hardy, Charles Dance, Jessie Buckley, and New Zealand’s own Kerry Fox don the period garb. Patrick Dempsey and Virginia Madsen star in this 10-part mystery about a writer who gets caught up in a murder investigation involving his mentor, an esteemed American author.

The story is based on a 2012 novel by Swiss author Joel Dicker.
