‘Weed your garden, mow your lawn’
‘‘Whoever did this is just a spineless bully.’’ Brora Crescent resident
It may be a busy time of year, but that is no excuse not to mow the lawns, according to an anonymous letter writer.
Residents of a Porirua street have had notes left in their letterboxes, telling them their properties aren’t up to scratch.
‘‘You are showing a blatant disrespect to your fellow neighbours,’’ the notes read.
‘‘Your property will be visually inspected again in the near future. We are all hoping for a vast improvement.’’
At least three homes on Brora Crescent were targeted by the mystery writer. All were upset to be on the receiving end.
The letter, titled ‘‘Neighbourly Papakowhai’’, urged people to keep Porirua beautiful.
‘‘Help keep Brora Cresent [sic] a place to be proud to live in. Some residents have really taken the time and effort to keep their properties looking good,’’ it said.
‘‘However your property is not one of these. Please get rid of your rubbish, weed your gardens and mow your lawns.’’
One woman, who did not want to be named, said she felt upset and angry. ‘‘Whoever did this is just a spineless bully. My daughter was scared because the letter is threatening and asked me ‘who’s targeting us, Mum?’
‘‘The person who wrote this has no idea what’s going on in people’s lives, and sometimes lawns aren’t a priority.’’
She hoped residents would band together, and maybe all grow their lawns in protest. ‘‘My back lawn will be perfect but I’m not mowing the front.’’
A man, who also didn’t want to be named, said he couldn’t understand why someone would leave such a note. ‘‘I’m a good neighbour and a nice person, why wouldn’t they come and talk to me?’’
He had mowed his lawns three weeks ago and had been planning to do them this weekend.
‘‘It’s Christmas, so it’s a busy time. Leaving nasty notes is not a nice thing to do at Christmas.’’
The Brora Crescent episode is not the first time Porirua people have been the target of an anonymous letter writer.
In 2016, a Flotilla Place resident received a letter telling them to replace their car as it was damaging property prices.
