‘Unruly’ tourist still on the run

A British man who was charged with assault, reckless driving and fraud after an incident at Auckland’s Takapuna Beach can now be named.

James Anthony Nolan, 26, who is allegedly part of the group of ‘‘unruly’’ tourists, lost his name suppression yesterday at the Auckland District Court.

However, a police spokeswoman confirmed yesterday morning he was still on the run.

Nolan’s lawyer, Sam Geller, told Community Magistrate Jan Holmes he wasn’t in a position to advance the case as his client wasn’t present.

Nolan first appeared at Auckland District Court on January 24 where he was granted interim name suppression by Holmes, but that order expired yesterday.

He was first charged with assault with a weapon and reckless driving. However, at his second appearance he was also charged with dishonestly using a document.

At that court appearance, Nolan was granted bail and was set to reappear at Auckland District Court on January 29.

He failed to attend and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

At his first appearance, the court heard how he was a digital printer back in the United Kingdom and had a wife and two children back home.

The assault and driving charges relate to an incident at Takapuna beach on January 13.

Nolan is charged with assaulting Krista Curnow using a car as a weapon.

Curnow previously told Stuff she felt ‘‘very intimidated’’, after she approached the group about not picking up rubbish.
