Ballerina towers over fountain
Some might think their eyes are deceiving them if they spot a giant ballerina dancing over Wellington’s Oriental Bay.
But they aren’t.
The 20-metre tall art installation over Carter Fountain is to highlight the Performance Arcade in Wellington this weekend.
A fixture on the fountain alters the shape of the water jet, forming a transparent screen for images.
Swans was developed by video artist Jeremy Brick, who worked with Royal New Zealand Ballet dancers Abigail Boyle and Sara Garbowski to create the projection.
The ballerina dances excerpts from Fokine’s The Dying Swan and Mario Radacovsky’s Black Swan, White Swan.
It will be lit from 8.45pm to 11pm each night over the next week.
It’s the first time in 36 years the fountain has been used for a public installation – the last was for the Sun Festival of 1983.
This year the Performance Arcade has a ‘‘follow the pink line’’ 3-kilometre trail from Wellington Railway Station to Oriental Bay.
Along the way audiences can see live art, culinary art, music and installation, and Swans, presented by Trustpower, would feature at the end of the walk.
The event, in its ninth year and located on Wellington’s waterfront, runs until March 3.
