Newtown festival is bigger than ever

- neatplaces.co.nz

The much-loved suburban street festival is back this week, and it’s bigger and better.

On March 3, Newtown will shut down its side streets and main drag, Riddiford St, to host thousands of happy festival-goers who come out every year to enjoy music, dancing and markets in the (fingers crossed) sunshine.

Feeding the crowds is always one of the best parts of being at the festival, and is never a problem thanks to street food stalls, cafes, and bars opening their doors and creating outdoor dining areas.

You will find new things to taste and try dotted among the 12 stages and 420 stalls on festival day.

Airport fare with a difference

Only an escalator away from your flight’s departure or arrival gate, Rydges’ new Whisky Lima Golf bar and restaurant is a different offering from your typical airport cuisine.

‘‘If you were to put it into a category it’s rustic bistro, not your typical deep-fried, heavy airport fare,’’ says Jamie Cant, manager of the newly opened spot on level two in the Wellington Airport Terminal.

‘‘We let diners maintain their nutrition while travelling.’’

Steaks, pastas, salads, and chowders make regular appearances on the seasonally considered menu.

‘‘We’ve gone for local produce flowing through into our drinks list, too,’’ says Cant.

There are local Marlborough and Martinborough wines, gins, whiskies, and vodkas.

With seating for 90 people, the space is a new option for a meal before you set off on your travels.

Press Hall celebrates

Two birthday celebrations will mark Press Hall’s first birthday on February 28.

The popular food destination on Willis St will host lunch and late-night market celebrations between noon and 2pm and 4pm and 9pm.

Each eatery will create a celebratory birthday dish to mark the occasion, and new wine bar Amador will host a pop-up bar in the main eatery. 78 Willis St, Te Aro

Great coffee, straight to your door

A new coffee subscription service, On The Grind, is a nifty way to make sure you never run out of an interesting brew.

The service is around 50c a cup, and the service’s owners have engaged local artists and creatives to design each month’s packaging.

If you order by the 15th of each month, you’ll receive a fresh month’s worth of beans on your doorstep a few days later. Shipping is free. 4 Glamis Ave, Strathmore
