TO THE POINT

Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt miss out on a long-planned interchange at Melling and Auckland gets $500,000 on a poorly financed subway in the city. Well, I suppose there are more votes in Auckland than in Lower Hutt.

Add me to those who wish to vote for Kermit the Frog in the next election of the GWRC (Muppets at the wheel of bus disaster, April 16). Clearly GWRC will need to drain the swamp to sort ‘‘Bustastrophe’’ and frogs know quite a bit about swamps. In March, some muppet shot a lot of people in Christchurch. New Zealanders everywhere said: ‘‘That’s not us.’’ Just two years ago, North & South published an article on Andrew Judd, then mayor of New Plymouth, whose council voted for a Maori ward seat in that city. Two councillors resigned in protest and set the scene for what followed: Judd was ‘‘ostracised, vilified, spat on and called a nigger lover’’. That’s not us – is it?

On Thursday the price of petrol in Porirua was $2.20, in Karori $2.26 and in the city $2.30. No CGT but there is a Capital Gas Tax – or should that be Corporate Gas Take. The non-Ma¯ori 85 per cent of the population, commonly referred to in the media as The Silent Majority, should more aptly be called The Pathetic Apathetics. Their only contribution to the running of the country is to put some marks on the electoral voting papers every three years.

The coalition Government did a great job of wasting tens of millions of dollars looking at a capital gains tax, then dumping the idea. With over 100 working groups in progress, this Government sure knows how to waste taxpayer funds. No wonder the coalition sees the need for more taxes.
