The Post

15 mins of fame

- KATE GREEN

This summer, The Dominion Post hit the streets to ask people who might not normally feature in the media random questions. They selected 10 numbers between 1 and 110 – and answered the corresponding questions. Today we chat to Gavin Hewitson ,24,a yo-pro who’s holding tight to his American accent, and is working his way up in Wellington’s comedy scene.

What’s the last thing you did that truly scared you?

Probably a stand-up comedy show. I’ve done so many, but it’s scary every time. It’s the kind of thing you can’t predict when you practise in your bedroom, either. The first time you get a reaction is usually on stage.

Best spot in your region for brunch? Why? Prefab. It’s always so busy. My go-to would be . . . they have this really good bratwurst sausage, and potato gratin.

Best purchase you’ve ever made?

A moleskin notebook. Then I feel accomplished while writing out all my goals, and every day, a to-do list.

Pavlova or trifle on Christmas Day? Why?

I hate both. Pavlova is just egg and sugar! I’d go for something like mango yoghurt, good chocolate cake.

Would you like to be famous? Why or why not?

Yeah! Probably for stand-up comedy. Then I’d try do good things with my fame and money. The last time I interacted with one of my neighbours was . . .

I was shooing their cat away from our chickens. We have three – they have names, Mum named them, but I don’t remember what they are. They’re 10 years old and still laying eggs. Nobody tells you chickens can live till they’re 15. What is your worst habit?

Spending money on food. I go to Sushi Bi a lot – so good.

What’s your biggest regret in life?

Not taking more time to figure out what I wanted to do [before uni], and what I wanted in life. Might have rethought my history degree. What issue do people need to talk about more?

I think we need to re-evaluate how we’re living in terms of mental health. Something needs to change, the high rates of depression and mental illness show that.

Should towns/cities ban begging? Why?

No, not without looking at the root cause. It’s up to the overall government system to find a solution.
