Indoor security camera for the paranoid
‘Have I been burgled?’’ It’s a question I asked myself, probably every 10 minutes, whenever I left my house.
My paranoia was so strong, I installed an $800 Arlo Wi-fi Security System. And for a while, I was pleased with my purchase.
My home security setup allowed me to put my mind to rest by simply opening an app on my phone and glancing at a very live, very boring, feed of my hallway and porch.
Best of all, I would get a notification ping on my phone if any motion was detected (only the dog so far). Bliss.
Well, it was bliss until this week. When Ring’s public relations team got in touch to inform me it’s new Ring camera was launching in New Zealand next month with a dirtcheap recommended retail price (RRP) of $119.99.
Had I known that Ring’s lowcost security camera was coming to New Zealand, I’d have persisted with my DIY home security setup (an old laptop’s webcam and the Chrome Remote Desktop app) for a couple of months longer, not spent a small fortune on the Arlo.
Even more annoying (for me, not you) is that the Ring Indoor Cam shares a lot of high-end features with the Arlo. Two-way talk; live view; night vision; plus motion detection and motionactivated recording.
The most significant difference is that the Ring camera can only be used indoors as it’s not weatherresistant. So it can’t be used outdoors like the Arlo can.
However, if you’re looking for an easy-to-use and affordable indoor security camera for your home that won’t scar your bank balance too much this is hard to beat at this price.
